How come they count jumping jacks like this? 1 - hands up, 2 - hands down, 3 - hands up, 1 - hands down? You have to do 2 jumping jacks just to get one? Why?

My theory is that this was an easy way for high school coaches to sneak one by their students. Though they aren't hard to do, I've never met anyone that actually liked to do jumping jacks. Some clever coach came up with the counting system that has fooled generations of elementary children and football players into doing more exercise than they realize.
